FAQ

Q: Who are you?

A: We are a married couple, mother and father, overachiever couple who are spending waaaaay too much time watching tv and waaaaaay too little time building our dreams.

Q: Why are you doing this?

A: Well, we were bored, and thought we might try our hand at putting our lives out in the public eye for scrutiny. No really, the truth is that we understand that you must admit it before you can quit it. It’s time to put up or shut up, and get going toward the life of our dreams!

Q: What do you hope to gain from this?

A: Well, if it all works out, at the end of 30 days we’ll be well on our way to our own Portable Empire and the life we know we desire.

Q: How did you get so addicted to reality tv, anyway?

A: Well, as with all addictions, it started innocently enough. A little Survivor here, a little Big Brother there, and before we knew it, we were TiVoing like crazy just to keep up with our addiction. We didn’t want to ‘miss’ anything!

Q: What are your favorite shows?

A: Our favorite shows are those where we can learn something. We love to watch Driving Force, the show about John Force and his family, and Gene Simmons Family Jewels because we can learn about how the businesses behind these families run. Shows like The Amazing Race let’s us tag along for a trip around the world and allows us to learn about different countries and customs. Shows like Dirty Jobs and 30 Days teaches us about human nature and the people who make up our world. Really, if it teaches us anything about human nature and how people think and act, we’re there!

Q: What inspired you to go on give up reality TV for 30 days?

A: We attended Pat O’Bryan’s UNSeminar in Austin this past weekend. The theme of all the speakers was GET GOING! When we looked at what really holds us back, we found our addiction at the top of the list. True to the spirit of the UNSeminar, we decided to GET GOING immediately and ditching reality TV for 30 days seemed like the logical next step.

Q: Why are you only giving up reality tv?

A: The truth is we won’t be watching ANY TV during the 30 days; however, since the vast majority of what we watch IS reality TV, we decided to speak the truth of the situation. Others may be addicted to sports, news, or whatever else interests them. We are fascinated with people, so ours was reality TV.

Q: When does the 30 days start?

A: It starts today – February 19, 2007 and ends March 20, 2007.

Q: Will you continue it past 30 days?

A: We’ll see… our goal is to use this time to create our Portable Empire, which is a way of saying our online business, not to run away from TV forever. We enjoy reality TV and are in no way saying reality TV should go away.

Q: What will be in your Portable Empire?

A: Our interests and knowledge expands to many things, so there’s no telling what will be produced and created during the next 30 days. We have a couple of projects that have gone by the wayside over the past few years. We have pet projects people have brought to us to joint-partner on. There’s always lots of opportunity in our life. Now is the time to discover what will happen if we REALLY apply ourselves for 30 days.

Q: Why 30 days?

A: Experts agree that to create a habit, it takes 30 days. We want to see what will happen with our habit – and our business – in the next 30 days.

Q: How do you think it will go?

A: Honestly, breaking any addiction is not without its pain. We really LOVE reality tv. It’s like mind candy to us. Yes, it’s embarrassing to admit that we spend this much time watching tv, yet we really feel we learn a lot from it. Still, any addiction is bad. You know you are an addict when you are talking about what’s going to happen when you are flipping through channels and you land on a World Poker Tournament and stop just because Rob’s (as in Survivor’s Amber and Rob) poker mentor is playing! It may be touch and go the first few days; we’ll see.

Q: Why are you asking people to contact you to let you know what’s going on?

A: We love the shows, we just don’t want to spend 60+ hours a week combined watching all of them. We thought this would be a great way to connect to others who are just as passionate about reality tv.

Q: Why not just look online?

A: Are you kidding? Trade one obsession for another? Do you know how MUCH information is available on each show’s website about each of the participants? No way, that’s a black hole we aren’t ready to step into.
